Smart Domain Investors work UP the food Chain not Down it.

Afternoon Folks!!

Let's take a ramblin' walk down the Domain Channel and look in on a few things.

Page Howe articulated an interesting point on DomainSherpa.com a couple weeks ago. He says what I believe as well that if you own the .com why would you swim downstream. On the other hand if you don't own the .com you want to always be upgrading until you do. Simple, accurate and priceless.

So once I have a .com, I seldom buy anything on the lower grade extensions. However I am always bombarded by folks trying to sell me the .net version of the domain I own, country codes, .org, .mobi, .younameit. But there is no need for those other lower tld extensions for what I need to do in life. None. So you can stop spamming me, never gonna happen.  No need, no want, no desire, no value = no sale. So stop wasting YOUR time!

I am not going to get Ricksblog.whatever.  or even RicksBlog.blog and since I have already branded RicksBlog.com, I don't see the importance of Ricks.blog. But let's say for the sake of argument, I get the domain. What am I going to do with it. I am going to point it to RickBlog.com. So where is the expansion? Where is the social redeeming value? Some may open new blogs on it but the vast majority won't. They will either do what I just described or move from a very crappy .com to .blog. Maybe. Most won't even do that.

Defensive registrations don't make an extension valuable.  If every trademark holder got their .xxx and just paid the fees each year and never hooked it up, what value is there other than to the registry and registrar? Where exactly does the domain investor come into that equation who wants to use his money to make more money? Sorry, I don't get it. Want to buy some .xxx domains for my purchase price?

Now each extension will come to market with their own pros and cons. You have to figure out that mousetrap and get it right or you lose. And when you lose, you lose your money. And when you lose all your money you are no longer a domainer. So if/when you do figure it out, then buy wisely and hold on for the long term. If you are not prepared to hold on for 10-20 years you are likely to be disappointed. And if you are looking to buy today to flip tomorrow, better get it right each time and still be financially prepared to hold on for 10-20 years. At that time you can re-evaluate.

When I hand register a domain I multiply the cost by 10 because that is the real cost to do business. Holding on for a minimum of 10 years. So it is not an $8-$10 purchase, it is an $80-$100 purchase.

The consumer will be picking the winners and losers not any of us. Sorry. They have been .com brainwashed for 20 years now. So the target audience you will really go after is just being born or is just a few years old. He will grow up with more extensions and will be more open to them. BUT, that does not negate the fact that more money will be spent collectively promoting .com even in his lifetime than all the other extensions added together. That is the mountain that will always keep .com where it is.

Whatever.whatever may be the greatest thing since ice cream. But again, they are not in control. When they go to use the extension and the results are not as expected or worse, what do you think a rational businessman would do other than to pull the plug as Mr. Johnson did with O.co. They did not want to do that. They did not it. intend to do that. But they were hit with reality and were FORCED to do it.

Domains have value for several reasons and when those reasons are not present, guess what? Neither is the value.

All I can do is point out pitfalls regardless of how things unfold. None of us know jack right now. But we do have evidence and parallels and that allows us to draw conclusions and it also points us in different directions.

I am loving it. The eyes of the world are going to be focuses on our little pond more and more and I don't see any downside. I see mirages. I see wishful thinking. I see ways to manufacture money. I see ways to exploit what is coming and I make no bones about it. Everyone is in it for the $$$. Nobody is trying to save the world.

But am I really going to swim downstream? No, probably not. However maybe there will be some keywords that just make sense. That are naturals. I can just put them away and see what happens. But most domainers will still pick 3 word .whatever with stupid misspells and think they have something. They do. It's called a recurring bill.

I just ask questions. Some have answers, some don't, some point one direction or another. It's called examining something fully and coming to a conclusion. But in business while you should not be weak, you need to be agile. Every new piece of info REQUIRES a re-evaluation of the subject whatever it is. Not doing that is a huge weakness disguised as a strength when it is not. You don't did in your heals like politicians, you always look for answers. And you follow those answers even when you don't like that answer. Especially when you don't like it. You can't ignore it. That is th seed of failure right there. Knowledge never hurt anyone however ignorance can kill ya!

In the last month I have paid VERY close attention to tv ads. I never see a .biz on tv. I never see most extensions on TV. I have seen .tv and .info ads but only 1 each. I have seen countless ads for .com. Countless. Every single ad. Yes, it could change. But where is the indications so far and there already is choice?

So as of today, there are no other conclusions to draw given the facts we already have, know and are not disputed. But each day new info comes. It will either reinforce what we already believe or it will go against it. As I said, ignore nothing!! To ignore means you FIGHT to stay ignorant. You used ENERGY to remain uninformed. That is the road to failure. An open mind is the road to success and an open mind is never threatened. He is always armed with info and facts that trump emotions and hoping.

Whatever the size of your wallet, whether it be $1000, $10,000, $100,000 or millions, your job is first keep those dollars safe and second, grow them as fast as you can. So if you buy that $1000 domain and double your money and do that less than TEN TIMES, you become a millionaire. And what if it took you 3 years to accomplish? That would be bad? You could do it in 1 if you pick right.

$1000 becomes, $2000. $2000 becomes $4000. $4000 becomes $8000, $8000 becomes $16,000. $16,000 becomes $32,000. $32,000 becomes $64,000. $64,000 becomes $128,000. $128,000 becomes $256,000. $256,000 becomes $512,000 and $512,000 breaks the million dollar mark! And that's only if you just double your money each time.

JC Penny Stock Drops to 1982 Levels!

Morning Folks!!

As you know I have written several blog posts about JC Penny's. You might ask why? I might ask you why you ask?

See there are lessons to be learned in all successes and all failures. This is a slow motion failure so you can watch it very closely and learn a to.

JCP has so many problems, where do you even begin? Well how about this post? This Post?

In 2007 I gave Kudo's to JC Penny for owning Gift.com

Barron's Says: "It’s getting ugly for J.C. Penney (JCP). The beaten-down retailer has dropped 6.2% to $7.89 at 12:44 p.m., which would be its lowest closing price since Mar. 9, 1982. What more can you say about the train wreck JC Penney has become?"

$8.00 30 years ago? Really? In today's dollars, that $8 would be worth less than $1.

We are witnessing a company that stood tall for close to a century  that is now dying. There is no room in the eco systems for JC Penny as it exists today. They have been SQUEEZED out of the marketplace. Survival is doubtful and I don't know that they are a good bet as a takeover.

If you Own the Keyword Left of the dot, You Win!

Morning Folks!!

Pretty simple. If you own a SINGLE keyword LEFT of the dot and there is a new matching gTLD to the right of the dot, your traffic will soar. YOU are the basket for all their misdirected traffic. You are the basket for any and all confusion. There is no downside for .com counterparts. But there is a significant upside. Possibly life changing.

Now if you don't own any of those keywords, your benefits will be much less.

There will be a .Property. That means Property.com is the big winner.

There will be .Free. That means Free.com is the big winner.

There will be .whatever and whatever.com will be the winner.

Will be the winner for doing nothing but being there.

And the new gTLD will be missing THE most important part of their marketing puzzle.

There is no question about this. It has already been proven. It is fact. Now those that won't accept that fact will have a costly road in front of them. Matter of fact, there are so many facts after nearly 20 years and some ignore all of them and are destined to repeat failures of the past that should NOT be repeated as failures of the future, But by ignoring facts, their destiny awaits!

.Mobi has 1.2MM registrations. WHO CARES??

As a domain investment it was a FLOP! Period!!

We are "Domain Investors". If you want to play the registrar or registry game, go buy Tucows stock or one of the stocks of the others. Buying domains is not the key.

.Mobile......Really?? They will NEVER see 1.2MM registrations. Many won't even see the .2 regardless of their grand plans. And without domainers, MANY will die on the vine. .meaningless is coming.

So with 700 gtld's the first thing to do is to eliminate the ones with no chance of survivability. Then from the ones left, eliminate the bottom half of that list. You should not have no more than 35 gTLD's to even consider and that means 665 of them will ROT away. Won't even reach the levels of .Aero. And have no investment value whatsoever.

The proof lies in the aftermarket of .mobi, .xxx, .co, .biz, .aero, .travel and the list goes on. Who gives a rats ass about how many registrations they have when as an investment it lacks the elements needed to GROW your money and grow the value of the domain.

My advice as always, buy GREAT .coms and never worry that you have something with no value. I would rather overpay for a great .com then get a bargain for something with little or no value.

Network Solutions Brokers My $1.35MM Domain Sale

Afternoon Folks!!

As I reported a few weeks ago, I had just reached agreement on my 4th Seven-Figure+ domain deal.

I can now release a few more details and I will release all the details in the next 2 weeks. What I can tell you is I sold the domain for $1.35MM and it was a domain I hand registered in 1996. But that is here nor there 17 years later. I knew what I saw then was real and I have been out there proving it ever since. The buyer got a great name that will help them expand and grow their business and brand and do everything a domain like this should do to make a business truly global.

I look forward to the domain going live and will report the rest of the story at that time.

I want to thank Network Solutions and specifically the Rep I will tell you about when I release all the details.

Is that a “DOT” or is it a “PERIOD”?

Morning Folks!!

I make a lot of typos. No not domain typo's. Typos when I post or even write emails. See my focus is my thought and I want to get that out before I lose that thought or word or phrase and so grammar and spelling and punctuation when I am in full typing mode results in a lot of typos. Plus I answer several hundred emails a day and sometime I don't even check what I wrote before hitting send. Not a good thing to do. I am trying to do it less. But not all the time.

Below is the paragraph below before I tried and fix all the issues and there are many.

"I make a lot of typos. No not domain typo's. Typos when I post or even write emails. See my focus is my thought and I want to get that out before I lose that thoughjt or word or phrase and so grammar and spelling and punctuation when I am in full typing mode results in a lot of typos.Plus I answer several hindred emails a day and sometime I don't even check what I wrote before hitting send. Not a good thing to do. I am trying to do it less. But not all the time."

Left of the dot, right of the dot I do this for a living and sometimes I am still confused. Left's and Right's are not exactly my strong point and I have a lot of company. About 3/4 of the planet. So I decided to make a point and use an example below of another stage of possible confusion by changing the "." dot or period. Will there be a live link there now?

"Should be fun to go.free admission too. sometimes you don't know if it is a domain name or they forgot to put a space after the period.that can be confusing."

so how is "go.free" handled?

So the question is how does the world process this. Do they see a "Dot" or do they see a "Period"?

Another unknown. It can be processed in different ways by different operations or programs or email or whatever. or is that .whatever? That period is so confusing.

Just another thing to think about and digest and it connects with my next post about keywords and the traffic growth certain domains will see.

Twitter Founder Talks About: Need, Want, Desire, Human Nature, Farming and 20 Years of Internet!!

Morning Folks!

"That warning wasn’t so much a slam on Twitter, which Williams helped create, as it was an observation about human nature. People will be people. The internet wants to give them exactly what they’re looking for. And people who understand how to channel that tendency will be disproportionately powerful."

In this article Williams talks about "Desire", "Human Nature " and "20 years". He talks about farming as I did just this week!

“The internet is not what I thought it was 20 years ago,” Williams said. “It’s not a utopian world. It’s essentially like a lot of other major technological revolutions that have taken place in the history of the world.” He compares it to, well, agriculture. “[Agriculture] made life better. It not only got people fed, it freed them up to do many more things — to create art and invent things.”

Finally, he uses the word "Desire" 4 different times. Talks about "Need" and  "Want"

Good read!

HallofShame.com Watch List Updated with QLP.com!

Evening Folks!!

The Hallofshame is becoming a busy place and once again we will be expanding. But that is for another day. Tonight it is to announce another case on HallofShame's Reverse Domain Name Hijacking watch list. QLP.com and the suit brought by Quality Logo Products, Inc.

YADAY!!! LOL!!! TOO FUNNY!

Now just because they are listed does not mean they will be found guilty.

YADAY!!! LOL!!! TOO FUNNY!

On the other hand, the evidence may point strongly to that outcome.

YADAY!!! LOL!!! TOO FUNNY! Just my personal opinion.

Rick’s Personal Picks for the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Auction

Afternoon Folks!!

Below are my picks for the 2013 TRAFFIC Auction. There are some bargains and as I have said before, a domainer starting with the portfolio below would be in better position than 90% of all domainers. And any domainer that can't see a domain of value on this list, well draw your own conclusions. For me to see a list of a 100-150 names and say there are a few that I would like to have in my portfolio is a good list in my book. I can see thoud=sands of domains until my eyes bleed and not find one that would make this list. Not every domain is for every domainer. But when you have one word domains with no reserves, it's worth paying attention to.

So my picks are all of them in each price level because I picked them. These are the best domains available during our submission period. And there are enough good domains at terrific prices that I think you will see our biggest auction since Howard and I started producing them ourselves a couple years ago.

Headwinds of .Whatever Illustrated in Real Time with .Me

Afternoon Folks!!

I like the .me extension. I own 1/3 interest in some of the best .me's (Date.me, marry.me, and love.me) and was 1/3 partner in the sale of Meet.me.

But the problem with .me is that you can not just stick any word in front of it and expect value. It is SCREAMING for  a VERB but at least a NOUN! But verbs are action and that is what .me needs. Action! Or a personal nam that has limited value in many cases. Once you get out of that realm, there are few naturals and naturals are what any .whatever is going to be about.

Right now Cax.com is running an auction of over 800 .me domains. probably the largest auction of .me's I have ever seen. But after a week or more, only 3 have bids. They are all VERBS! And only one of the three has commercial value in my book and that could be limited.

So here is a real world example of the headwinds to come with .whatever and a little look inside of the elements that are missing in many of the gtld's. And if those things are missing that means fewer people use them. Fewer people advertise them and fewer people know of them. Some gtld's are so limited that their hopes of selling enough to support themselves is also limited and may be a complete challenge. They throw around these big numbers and I sit here and wonder how they made that leap. They ain't sold shit yet and they are in the millions and hundreds of thousands. The first 1000 may be more challenging than they ever expected. And some will smother their own extensions by hoarding the best keywords. Sex.mobi is still owned by .mobi. It probably could have garnered $500k if they sold it when the iron was hot. How much is sex.mobi worth today?

I use actual past events to support my position. Those events hold the answers to those events yet to unfold because those that walk the same path are likely to end  up in the same place. Or same ditch.

A Meaningless .com Domain Name vs Meaningful .whatever

Morning Folks!!

A meaningless .com has no value. None. I would rather have a one word .whatever. Worthless is worthless and a risk beats worthless. Did I just change my view? Hell no! Just gave a starting point comparison. I will go into it much deeper as you read on. I just described the POINT where .whatever comes into play for ME and maybe for YOU too.

As I said this morning on DomainSherpa, if you pick crappy .coms you are not going to be able to pick better .whatevers.

When I buy a domain for $10 I don't count it as a $10 purchase. I count it as a $100 purchase because I am buying and looking at it as a 10 year purchase. So when I see a domainer with 1000 worthless domains and he is broke and does not know what to do I just wonder why he does not dump every one of them. Keep your best 10 IF you really even have a best 10. But a portfolio with 1000 domains to me is a guy with a $100,000 worth of spending power and he does not know how to use that power. How to make a 10 year deal with that $100k. Consolidate to 1 domain or a handful of them. Pay them off over time.

When I ask somebody to tell me their 2 or 3 best domains and they can't, guess what? They can't for a reason. That's sad.

A $100,000 domain can be bought TODAY and with the same $$$ you would pay on registration fees for pigeon shit, one can actually buy something life changing. So many ways to climb this mountain and find gold but folks have weighed themselves down with aluminum foil and dirt.

And for folks that go after .whatever. you better be focused on 1 word domains that actually mean something. If you play it the way you are today with 3 and 4 unrelated words.....not going to happen in 1000 years! If the left of the dot has no relation to the right of the dot, then what do you have? A recurring bill is what you have.

What happened to all those guys with a million domains in their portfolios? They are gone! That game is over. Few survived. That's about to happen to those with crappy domains. Even with a .com. Today I gave an example of a crappy domain. Something I seldom do but on DomainSherpa, that is the job description. EcommsConsulting.com was the one I picked during the show to talk about. What do you want me to say? It's worthless from where I sit. And it is worthless for a number of reasons. If you want to debate the point, don't. Just go buy it from him instead. But I give solid reasons why it has no value.

Folks are wasting tens of thousands of dollars by not taking the time to do it right. I keep saying how sad it is. Especially when the market is filled with bargains. Great domains at bargain basement prices all over the place and probably for the very last time. By this time next year, THAT game will be over as well and there will be plenty of .coms dying on the vine.

Worthless was worthless from the get go. But events move even worthless right off the table to oblivion.

However it is still a false choice whether anyone is really forced to use a non .com.

See for $500-$2500 there are GOOD domains that would serve the needs for ANY business. Some are really good domains. They are plentiful. Just because folks have yet to make the mental leap of the real world parallels I have talked about for all these years does not change the facts of what is coming and the mental leap that they will eventually make. That takes EXACTLY 20 years to change that mindset. I ask only one question"

"If you open a store in your town today wherever that town is, how much does it cost?"

Please you MUST add up each and every expense. Yes, garbage counts. Yes, insurance counts. Yes the furniture counts. Yes the employees count. Yes the electric counts. Yes the RENT counts. Yes it ALL counts. How many thousands is that on an annual basis? How about over 10 years? How big is the radius of your service? Is it worldwide or only as far as a few miles. Could it be worldwide? Can you expand? How much would that cost?

Your damn store SIGN alone would cost you more than the domain name.

This is all almost primitive that so few have connected the dots. But as you see the sales going up, they are starting to figure out just how powerful a great domain is and how inexpensive it is to maintain over the years. Expand over the years. I mean that alone should do the trick.

40% of business is "Word of mouth" and few on the Internet have gotten that memo. If you know that 40 cents of every dollar you make is word of mouth then you would think folks would focus on what might be the biggest pool of customers they have. So .whatever has to do one thing and one thing only. It MUST be memorable and easy to communicate to 3rd parties that you do not communicate directly to.

If that communication is confused and they end up somewhere else, then you lose. And if that somewhere else is a competitor, then you feed him while you starve. You grow HIS business while destroying your own. You work for him as his slave and he laughs and you don't even know you are that slave.

I talk about the foundational elements that make a domain have great value to multiple parties as opposed to domains so isolated and out there that it is like waiting for a Greyhound bus at the North Pole. Good luck with that.
